Only the nobility of Thanjavur were said to have adorned the weaves of Kodali karuppur in the late 18th – early 19th centuries. The Karuppur designs, revived by the master weavers, have now been reimagined in Kanchipuram weave.

The body is adorned with traditional betel leaf motifs, while the pallu and border are interspersed with okra and kamalam motifs. The sarees were painstakingly created using natural dyes in the traditional method. The emerald green of the body comes from indigo over-dyed with mulberry leaves. While the iconic crimson pallu, quintessential to the Karuppur saree, is a combination of lac and Indian madder.
